So I had this idea.
Actually, I totally stole it from Allie and Tia. If When I succeed I give you ladies all the credit. Okay, I should get some of the credit too for doing the work. Whatevs.
ANY-FUCKING-WAY. I want to start running. And not just from bears. Or rabid dogs. Or bill collectors.
I have done some reading and it looks like running is an excellent way to get in shape and feel awesome. Jacob and I are overweight. This is no surprise. We are also unhealthy. Again, not a shocker. We need to get fit and healthy and I think that having a great place to run like our new neighborhood will be a good start for us. We can put the baby in the stroller and get running! I found a site that has created a ‘couch to 5k’ program with a week-by-week schedule that we will use to get us into shape.
However, all of the planning in the world won’t do a damn thing if we don’t get off our asses and get out the door.
While I might be totally motivated to make this change I can’t force Jacob to do it. I mean, I COULD, but I want him to want to do it too. I think he’s ready for a change.
He is using the house as a catalyst for big changes in our lives. We’ll be home owners in a good neighborhood so we can safely go for walks and eat healthier (why owning a home changes our eating habits I don’t know) and BE happier.
Okay, I can get on board with this logic. It’s a new start. A perfect time to make some changes.
So let’s do it.
I will probably create a new blog just for keeping track of our running once we get up and running (YES! A MOTHER FUCKING PUN!).
First things first! If you are a runner or have excellent exercise habits feel free to answer the following:
- Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes?
- Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners?
- Do you have a favorite running website you’d like to recommend?
- What do you eat or drink before running?
- Is it better to run in the morning or at night?
- How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested?

I used to run a LOT. I don't anymore, as my knees have decided against running (my tibia slides out of place. PAIN. OH, THE PAIN.) Anyway… I think I'm an expert on everything so I'll answer these. LOL!
1. Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes?
Get running shoes. They're so lightweight and the cushioning is different, to better absorb the shock/impact.
2. Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners?
Depends on your feet. I have wide feet and New Balance are always my favorite. Nike sometimes runs a little more narrow, but you just never know. I do have one handy hint for you though: get those terry ankle socks and wear them INSIDE OUT, the nappy stuff on the inside tends to blister you when you run. So make sure to take them with you when you try on your shoes, and walk around the store for as long as they let you to make sure they are 100% comfy. If anywhere rubs/slides/stubs, it'll rub/slide/stub worse when you're running.
3. Do you have a favorite running website you'd like to recommend?
Not really.
4. What do you eat or drink before running?
Plenty of water of course. Make sure you eat enough to give you energy but wait long enough so you're not all burpy when you run. That sucks. Nothing ruins a run like wanting to hurl!
5. Is it better to run in the morning or at night?
I exercise in the morning, always have. I have the most energy in the morning, and since I tend toward tummy problems, I can usually bet that my stomach will feel better in the morning than in the evening. Plus, once you get into your running groove and get over the "this is killing me" tired phase, you'll actually start getting a bit of a natural high from it that will give you more energy the rest of the day.
6. How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested?
The best sports bra you can find. TRY THEM ON. I have a whole drawer full of crappy ones that I just grabbed off the rack without trying and they suck so much. Nike ones are generally good and I've actually gotten quite a few nice ones at Target too.
I run three times a week. Three miles at a time. I'm a beginner as well, it has taken me nearly 8 weeks to work up to 3 miles. I wear Asics because i started with plain ole athletic shoes and realized quickly that wasn't going to work. I use the Couch 2 5K program. Just google it, very easy to find the schedule. I usually eat a banana before I run. I am very large chested as well and wear two sports bras. I've been meaning to invest in some better ones made for hooters as big as mine, must get on that.
Good luck. I'm down 15 pounds and way toner than I've been since before kids.
Can I just say GOOD FOR YOU! Even when I was in high school and only weighed 125lbs I didn't run. I will never ever be able to run, especially now that I weigh ohh 115 more pounds then I did in high school. BUT! I am proud of anyone that can run. I do not have the muscle structure or something to be able to run. My feet go numb. And I was in shape in HS, I played basketball year round. Try to run a mile though? uhm no, that would take me 10 minutes because I would walk.
Get to running!
Did you know that die hard runners have bruised toes and toes with missing toe nails and people who run marathons can get bloody nipples. Ewwwww!
Okay, so now that I have sabbotaged your healthy plan, let me say that I am fluffy and should shut my damn mouth. Good luck. Go out there and kick the ass of running.

1.Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes?
If you're really going to run, like several times a week, get good shoes made for running.
2.Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners?
Go to a running store. They'll watch you walk/run and tell you what kind to try out based on how your feet work.
3.Do you have a favorite running website you'd like to recommend?
Runners World has a lot of good info.
4.What do you eat or drink before running?
A banana and water.
5.Is it better to run in the morning or at night?
I like to run in the morning. If I wait til night, I am often so tired a run just feels draining. Once I get through the agony of getting out of bed, a morning run really gets the day off to a great start.
6.How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested?
I should note i'm only large chested while nursing. I have used full tank-style sports bras in the past but right now I'm loving one I got at Wal-mart. I don't know what brand it is but it's got those molded foam cups, pulls over your head but also buckles in the back. Frankly, it's a pain to get on and I often have to have Hubby buckle it for me, but it does a nice job controlling the bounce and it's comfy.
First of all GOOD FOR YOU! This will be so great and not just physically. I exercise mostly because it makes me less crazy. It's so hard to get started but once you get in two weeks of regular fitness you're there!
Ok, I hate running. With a passion. Both of my parents were runners though, so I know a bit about it (bad backs, no joke). Because I excersise regularly- or I did up until last week- here's my two cents:
1. YES you must buy running shoes. I prefer Asics.
2.Sara from Domestically Challenged has a great blog for her running: http://spazrunner.blogspot.com/
3. I only exercise in the AM. It boosts metabolism and you're good to go for the day. If I don't work out in the AM, I don't work out that day, period. That's just me though!
4 I'm a swimmer because I hate sweating, and I hate panting like a dog. I will run if there is no pool, but swimming is easy on the joints and works all of the muscles!
GOOD LUCK! I'm so excited for you. Keep us posted, k??
Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes?
running shoes. New Balance.
Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners?
No clue whatever is most comfy.
Do you have a favorite running website you'd like to recommend?
nah. I recommend your fav. get pumped music that always keeps me going.
What do you eat or drink before running?
This sounds weird, but it really works. I eat a hard boiled egg. It gives you energy and keeps you from being too sore. Don't drink a bunch before you go or you will be peeing on yourself. just keeping it real.
Is it better to run in the morning or at night?
morning. Im pretty sure there are studies that show you are more apt to stick with it if you do it in the morning. I have been running 2 miles a day and if I don't do it early I won't do it at all.
How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested?
Maddox Shop. Best store ever. Spend the money for a great bra, they will fit you so you don't wander around lost. They have all price ranges, check it out.
Good luck it really does make you feel great! It just suck in the beginning. I also would get a heart rate monitor it keeps me motivated to see how many calories Im burning.
As far as shoes go, everyone's feet are different so go in the store and try on RUNNING shoes, there is a difference. I love asics, my husband loves mizunos, it just depends on your foot. I started out with some cheaper addidas and then when I knew I was sticking with running I dropped a pretty penny on some asics.
As for eating, I can't eat before I run so if I run in the morning I usually just eat a small cup of peaches and about 4oz of water. On evening runs I eat when I get done.
I run whenever I can get my husband to watch the kids, so if he's working late then I run in the morning before he leaves for work but I prefer to run in the evening because it's warmer.
If you're busty then you can always wear an underwire under your sports bra (my cousin does that, she's an H cup, pretty busty). Running completely took my boobs away, I wasn't large before but I'm tiny now. Of course, it also took a lot of fat from other places so I don't complain.
Okay, now the best running advice ever: Sign up for a 5K now!!! Pay for it and put it on your calendar, commit! Once you commit like that you will stick with it.
Good luck and feel free to ask me anything you need, if not runnersworld.com will have the answer to anything running related and sometimes even not running related.
I want to start running too.
I want to start running after I have the baby. Like RUN A MARATHON kind of running.
So it would be great if YOU do it now, and become an expert and then tell me everything I need to know come next summer.
Thaaaaaaaaaanks!
The only advice I have is to just get out and do it. Don't worry too much about the particulars in the beginning, because if you do, you'll never get "up and running" so just put on your ratty old converse (or whatever shoes you have) your sports bra (youmust have one of those) and GO!
I don't think running can help you. Your issues are in your head.
Keyboard Warriors are soooo cool. Wanna ditch homeroom and go to Dairy Queen with me, Anonymous? I got my learners permit last week, we can drive my dad's car over there.
Oh wait…you mean we're not 15?? Huh, that changes some things.
I ran >CC-> and Track in High School and was even up for a scholarship, which my grades lost me. God I was in damn good shape! I ran all this summer until we moved and then with no family to watch Sophia, the running stopped.
I miss it and I think you've just inspired me to get moving again, too!
1. Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes? I actually wear my track spikes, but with the spikes removed. They're the most lightweight things out there!
2. Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners? I always recommend Nike Crosstrainers, or Aisics.
3. Do you have a favorite running website you'd like to recommend? http://www.ccjournal.com/
4. What do you eat or drink before running? THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED: A sandwich, with ham, turkey, colby cheese, and mayonaise. A teaspoon of honey. A granola bar. It was my fuel food. Don't ask. I have no idea. But it worked for me.
5. Is it better to run in the morning or at night? It depends on the season. Personally, if it's during the warmer months I preferred running at night. It was just right. I wasn't sweating profusely but the air wasn't so chill that it was making it harder to breathe. In the colder months, always earlier.
6. How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested? Buy a sportsbra that is a little under your size. Then put one that is your size over top of it.
You go girl! I used to be WAY more active than I am now. I'm about to make the change though.
I recommend you get good running shoes. You can't go wrong with Brooks or Asics. Remember, you get what you pay for.
As for strapping down the girls, I always strap mine down with 2 sports bras and it works well for me.
I think the time of day you exercise will depend on your schedule and if you are a morning person or not. I can do either or. In fact I used to work out twice a day. Once in the am and then again in the pm. That's back when I had some fucking motivation. Now I'm just a lazy ass.
Anyway, good luck!
Good for you! Running is a great way to get in shape and the best part is it's FREE!
Here are my answers:
Do you wear actual running shoes or just athletic shoes?
Yes, and I splurge here. I go to Run On in Richardson and get fitted for shoes specific to my feet and the way I run. It makes all the difference in the world. I spend about $80-$90, but it's money well spent. If you can't afford that, at least get actual running shoes (I'm partial to Asics).
Is there a particular brand that is better to go with for beginners?
Not sure that any brand is a "beginner" brand, think it's more what works for your feet.
Do you have a favorite running website you'd like to recommend?
Hmmm… I haven't really looked at a lot of running websites.
What do you eat or drink before running?
1.5 hours before running I eat a PB&J on wheat with a banana. I also eat a Gu gel every 4 miles (but I'm training for a marathon, so that's probably excessive for a beginner).
Is it better to run in the morning or at night?
I HATE getting up in the morning, but I have to say it's much better to get your runs over early. Half the time I tell myself I will run at night and then I lose the motivation before I get around to it.
How do you strap down the girls if you are large chested?
Well, I used to be large chested until my monster sucked the life out of them, but I just invested in one really good sports bra by Nike and washed it a lot. Also doubled up bras on occasion.
GL on your running journey!!
Lolly go to Luke's Locker in Frisco. They will check your feet for the shape and watch you jog a little bit and decide what running shoes are appropriate for your feet.
runnersworld.com or forrunnersbyrunners.com For you I would start here….
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/beginners/the-total-beginners-quick-guide-to-running/24.html
don't eat or drink right before running. You shouldn't eat or drink anything 45 mins prior to any form of exercise. I would recommend nothing within a two hour window.
Morning or night is your preference. Depends on how your body reacts to running. Does it energize you? Then you would want to run in the morning to start your day. Does it make you tired? Then run at night. Personally I run after work so I can de-stress. I also don't get tired or energized. It is just a nice way to unload my thoughts and relax.
Big Boob syndrome
What to Look For
Don't buy one that you have to pull on over your head. For one, they're embarrassing to put on and second they will not offer you good support. If it's stretchy enough to pull on over your head then it's definitely not tight enough to hold you tight.
Look for a one that hooks in the front or the back.
It needs to be the right size to keep you held in tight. They tend to run smaller in size in order to do this.
Invest the time to find the right sized bra.
Look for material that wicks away moisture. Nylon works great for this.
Also the material that makes up your bra should not be stretchy. Try stretching it with your hands. Look for strong fabric.
A good sports bra for big busts will probably be ugly. The uglier the better. You're not trying to win beauty contests here, so it's okay.
It needs to have lots of re-enforced fabric, extra wide bands, and full coverage cups. No one will see it anyway, but they will notice you if you have to run with your hands supporting your chest. Now that looks funny.
Brands that are good…
Enell 100 Sports Bra
Shock Absorber B109 D+ Max Sports Bra
Good LUCK!!
If you've never ever been a runner, be sure to handle walking for 45 min at about a 4.0 pace (on a treadmill, that's what I prefer). The incline is steady and flat and you need that as a beginner. Then start incorporating 30 seconds of 5.0 and walking 2 min. I think the Couch to 5K does a program like that. Just don't overdo it because running is a lot of stress on your body especially knees, ankles, hips, and back. My back would get so sore after a good walk/jog. Anyway, work up to 1 min run/ 2-3 min walk. Always go for 30 min or longer. My old blog logs my attempt at running. I'm still wanting to run again if my body will have it (hello 3 knee surgeries) but I'm starting on the elliptical this time. I want to get my muscles built up before I traumatize my joints. If the muscles aren't strong enough yet, they can't support the josseling and pounding you'll get. Feel free to ask me anything about my experience. Running is NOT easy and you've got to start out slow. It takes a long time. I've only ran 1 mile total without stopping. And it was HARD. But you're absolutely right about toning and losing weight. Regular walk/jogs of 30-45 min each melted the pounds off. My blog was chirocindy.blogspot.com
